meet destiny's cache':

May 15, 2018

Tell us a little about yourself.

Hi, I am Destiny Sweeney Durant, the designer and creator of Destiny’s Cache’. I am originally from the DMV area and love anything that deals with design and being innovative. I love art, traveling, food, museums, ballets and of course trap music.  I also like to act like I am doing standup when I am alone in my mirror.

Tell us about your brand.

Destiny's Cache’ is a self love line that aims to promote women of color in everyday decor, travel and lifestyle. Our lifestyle line carries shower curtains, passport covers, laptop bags, wine accessories, and pillows. Destiny’s Cache’ also promotes/participates in giving back to our communities and world at large.

Is there any inspiration behind your brand?

The lifestyle line of products is inspired by grandma, affectionately known as “Maw Maw”. She was the epitome of black excellence. Growing up in the time that not many blacks had the opportunity to attend college and experienced segregation. However, she worked very hard to provide for her family while always being a class act. She was a woman of faith that loved fashion and dressing up everyday of the week. She was my personal fashion guru. Weekly, she would always ask me to make her a new piece of jewelry or something “hip” so she would be “en vogue". It was my relationship with her, my mom and my friends that helped inspire six queens of color that I call my freshmen class.

What is your favorite item you sell?

My favorite item to sell is our passport cover. It makes me happy to know that someone is probably going on a trip that requires a passport. I think it’s important to see the world around you and have a global perspective. Also, TSA gets to see a poppin girl on the face of your passport.

When did you start creating your products?

I have always been an entrepreneur. This goes back to when I would sell lemonade in front of my house every Saturday.  I branched into Destiny’s Cache’ more as a healing project to keep my grandma’s legacy alive and create products I did not see but wanted when I would go into a store. Also, I was tired of not seeing minorities represented in everyday lifestyle products. Hey, if you can't find it, create your own!

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs?

We are all are instruments in God’s symphony. God made you to shine, so shine on baby! Also, don't give up! Nothing in this world comes easy and especially if you want to be the very best. Also, understand sometimes you are going to fail but that’s ok, its a learning lesson and life is about learning. A quote I love is “Our crown has already been bought and paid for. All we have to do is wear it”- James Baldwin

If you could give your item to anyone in the world, who would it be? And why?

Issa Rae and all the girls that feel “insecure” at times. I have claimed that something out of my line will one day be on an episode of Insecure. I can relate to Issa Rae’s character at times and I like that the series shows the many facets of a black woman. These are some of the same feelings I want my line to exude, proud AF of who you are. Hey, there is only one you and that's pretty awesome!
